California: San Juan Capistrano (*)

The city of San Juan Capistrano was created around the Mission San Juan Capistrano, and many of the area homes and strip malls resemble the Spanish architecture that composes the Mission.

The city incorporates the widest variety of building styles in Orange County, including adobes from the 18th century, million-dollar homes in the gated communities of the hills, and working ranches in its foothills.
San Juan Capistrano was the former stopping ground for a population of cliff swallows that migrated each year from Argentina to the Mission San Juan Capistrano.

Points of interest:

Mission San Juan Capistrano

Mission San Juan Capistrano was a Spanish mission  founded on All Saints' Day November 1, 1776, by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order, named for Giovanni da Capistrano, a 15th century theologian and "warrior priest" who resided in the Abruzzo region of Italy.  The Mission has the distinction of being the oldest building in California still in use.

The El Adobe de Capistrano restaurant site has been recognized as a California State Historical Landmark.

It is situated just two short blocks south of the historic Mission and the Train Depot. The building was originally two separate structures. The northern section was the home of Miguel Yorba Adobe. The southern section was the Juzgado (court and jails).
