California: Pasadena/ Home of the Tournament of Roses Parade (*)

Pasadena California is the ninth largest city in Los Angeles County and famous for hosting the Tournament of Roses Parade and the annual Rose Bowl football game. The city is also home to the Norton Simon Museum of Art, the Pacific Asia Museum, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and California Institute of Technology.

The Tournament of Roses Parade is held each year on January 1 (or on January 2, if the 1st falls on a Sunday). The first parade was held in 1890 and was originally sponsored by the Valley Hunt Club, a Pasadena social club. The motivation for having the parade was to tell the world about the paradise in California where the flowers are always blooming. The parade typically lasts almost three hours and stretches five miles. One million viewers traditionally camp out over New Year’s eve to secure the best viewing position along the parade route.

Following the Parade, the city hosts "A Showcase of Floats," a unique opportunity for the public to see and get up close to the floral floats.

The first, oldest, and most famous college football postseason bowl game, is the Rose Bowl Game. It is held at the Rose Bowl Stadium, a National Historic Landmark, on New Year’s Day.
