Pismo Beach is also home to the largest Monarch Butterfly Grove. Each year thousands of Monarch butterflies flock to Pismo Beach seeking shelter from the freezing northern winters. From late October to February, the butterflies cluster on the limbs of Eucalyptus trees located in a grove at Pismo Beach.
Avila Beach was established in the latter half of the 19th century where it served as the main shipping port for San Luis Obispo. Today, the town still has a working commercial fishing pier and extensive apple orchards line the inland areas.
